Unmet as yet

A phone call this morning revealed that our offer to house a hurricane refugee family has, so far, not been matched with a willing family. The charity representative told me that, so far, all displaced persons who have been processed through the relocation system are unwilling to be even temporarily relocated as far away from their homes as California.

I so wholly understand how they must feel right now, may God bless them. I can't imagine the toll on the heart and the soul it takes to realize your home and community is gone, and facing the decision as to how far away from your home you are willing to travel to re-establish your life or simply seek solace and heal for a spell.

To all displaced/homeless/bewildered/scared victims of Hurricane Katrina's fury: our family and so many others are here for you, when and if you need us. Our homes are your homes and our hearts are ready to welcome and embrace you. A nation extends it's arms to you and waits.

Just wait. The Red Cross has a plan: First Houston (over capacity already) and Dallas (also over capacity) then several smaller cities in central Texas, including Waco. It may be a few weeks, but I bet you'll be needed.

We called again tonight and were told that they will be matching homes with evacuess in our area in approxmately 2-4 weeks! The various charities are transporting people first to larger relocation centers to be "processed" (I hope this involves counseling, basic needs, completion of paperwork for available emeergency governmental aid, and the ability for these folks to make some personal decisions about their own futures and lives). Then, we were told that some people would be voluntarily moved to other states, some would be reunited with relatives, and then larger groups like churches would be contacted first to house as many as possible.

But THEN we could potentially expect to get a call that our home is needed! What a blessed opportunity to just plain LOVE people, you know? I am so hopeful that this Christmas we can offer more than a stable and manger to the meekest of our fellow Americans in need.

May God prepare our home and hearts and equip us for the journey.

That is just so cool that you may be getting a family soon. Now that is hands-on helping. I only wish I had the space.
