not just a day off from work

God bless the parents, the teachers, the pastors, the preachers, the children, the friends and the family of Dr. Martin Luther King. These blessed people helped to shape and support this human being into the iconic leader who helped our nation shed its shameful wont of judging one another by the shade of our skin rather than the content of our character.

My children live his dream. May we all.

The PBS affiliate broadcast a live speech made by one of the men who walked with MLK for civil rights. It was a fitting tribute to Dr. King.

By the way, Lachen-any luck finding the presents yet? :)

LOL Doug - thanks for asking.

So far, nothing yet. I am hoping I find them before next Christmas. I actually took a long, hard look around in the attic last week. I know full well I did not hide them there, but did not want to leave any stone (or attic box) unturned. Sigh....I'll keep you posted.

Be careful with how broad a brush you paint, Lachen. Among MLK's friends are numbered Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Jimmy Carter.

What you said was great, Lachen. Because he had friends that we might not agree with politically it should not detract from his message and his dreams. I have friends who are sinful people but I am not defined by them. Neither should Dr. King.

Scott, read the post again. Lachen referred to "these blessed people" as shaping MLK and his message.

What shaped him was God. What enabled his message to reach out was the guilt of white America. What helped it succeed was the blind ignorance of the bigots who violently opposed him.

Allan, thank you. God breathed life into Martin Luther King, Jr. and I FIRMLY believe the Lord Jesus Christ anchored his every step and formed the foundation of his dream.

On this particular birthday, I thought it fitting to acknowledge those other people whom God placed in Dr. King's life to sharpen him and bless his ministry, his words, his actions, and help shape his legacy.

YES, some of these people have taken a walk off the map and they have become hopelessly lost by discarding the compass that so defined Dr. King.

But I am grateful that they existed so that Dr. King's life was as richly blessed as it was, and so that we, by inheritance of his words and purpose, are richer indeed.

For the record, Jesse Jackson has become a disgrace to the service of Christ and to people. I pray his heart returns to the message of love and salvation through Jesus rather than the trumpet of racial divide and conquer that consistently disgraces the DREAM of Dr. King.
